Event Details

Restoration Intangible Cultural Heritage Experiential Studio will host an experience workshop on the handicraft of fruit pit carving, a national-level intangible cultural heritage, on May 23.

FPC work of Ge Zhenxiong

Suzhou Fruit Pit Carving (FPC) boasts a long history and Guangfu FPC has remained an important part of the local FPC industry in Suzhou. In particular, Zhoushan Village of Guangfu Town in Wuzhong District has gained the reputation of "China's No.1 Fruit Pit Carving Village".

Guangfu FPC mainly uses olive pits to create minute patterns of landscapes, flowers, birds, persons, Buddhas, arhats, etc. with such skills as surface carving, round carving and fretwork. In 2008, Guangfu FPC was listed into the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Ge Zhenxiong, a young FPC craftsman, will be invited to lead the workshop. Ge has been immersed in FPC since his childhood and in 2016, he set up his own FPC studio. By combining traditional skills with modern features, Ge has developed a distinctive personal carving style.

The workshop will see Ge brief the participants on the origin and history of FPC and show them how to do a cute rat pendant step by step (carving, burnishing, piercing, etc.) on a small olive pit.

The picture is only for reference, please make the object as the standard.

In addition, Ge will display some of his FPC works, including the ones made during the COVID-19 epidemic. 2020 marks the Year of the Rat in the Chinese Zodiac, and it’s really a good idea to make a rat pendant on your own, which will be a perfect gift for yourself or your friends.
