Event Details

Restoration Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Studio will host an event on the making technique of imitation antique bianzhong* at Suzhou ICH Shop this Saturday (December 26).

*bianzhong (编钟), an ancient Chinese musical instrument, consists of a set of bronze bells. China is the earliest country to make and use this musical instrument.

The earliest history of traditional Chinese musical instrument making in Suzhou can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 – 446 B.C.). At that time, the copper smelting technology was highly advanced in the Wu State, which provided favorable conditions for the production of bronze musical instruments.

In the process of thousands of years of development and inheritance, the city’s skilled craftsmen have been improving their skills, and the musical instruments turned out by them, characterized by beautiful shape, reasonable structure, exquisite workmanship and pure timbre, have won great reputation all over the country.

The Making Technique of Suzhou Traditional Chinese Musical Instrument was listed in the second batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative List in 2008.

Jin Lei (金磊), representative inheritor of the Making Technique of Suzhou Traditional Chinese Music Instrument in Gusu District, will be invited to the session this weekend to introduce the history, culture and making technique of imitation antique bianzhong and show the audience how to play bianzhong.

As the founder of Suzhou Ganjiangfang (苏州干将坊) and the winner of the special award of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jin Lei has created a number of traditional Chinese musical instruments including the national-level ritual musical instrument “Chinese Harmonious Bell”, the world’s largest Gong, large bass copper drums, horn double tone chimes, etc.

Besides, the products of Suzhou Ganjiangfang Co., Ltd. will be on display at Suzhou ICH Shop from December 25 to December 31. Welcome to the shop!

You can also watch the livestream via Douyin App to know more about the ancient musical instrument.
