Event Details

Taste Jiangnan culture and admire Suzhou crafts. What will happen when Suzhou embroidery meets Suzhou Fan? Let's participate in the intangible cultural heritage experiencing event and find out!

Suzhou Embroidery, one of the four most famous embroideries in China, originated in Suzhou and has a history of more than 2,500 years. Artists normally use one threaded needle to work on different patterns on different fabrics. Among others, “double-sided embroidery” is the best known one and now it has evolved into double-sided embroidery with different colors, patterns and needle stitches. It was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage list (first batch) in 2006.

Suzhou Fan, falling into three types: folding fan, sandalwood fan and silk palace fan, is also known as Ya Shan (elegant fan). It has gained in popularity among people both at home and abroad since early 20th century. The making technique of Suzhou Fan was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.

On the occasion of Mid-Autumn Festival, we will invite Zhang Lixing, inheritor of Suzhou Embroidery, to explain the making of Suzhou embroidery fan. You can expect to know the history of Suzhou Embroidery and the four most famous embroideries in China as well as how to appreciate Suzhou Embroidery works. Besides, there will be an exhibition of Suzhou Embroidery, where you can buy your favored products.

Zhang Lixing, born in October 1990, is now the general manager of Lu Fuying Embroidery Art Gallery, and has won 15 gold awards, 24 silver awards, 14 bronze awards, seven honorable mentions and one traditional skill award for her embroidery works. Her original embroidery work The Lotus has been held in the collection of Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
